PROFESSOR IN ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

 

VACANCY

Ghent University Global Campus (GUGC) is opening a position in the rank of (assistant) professor in environmental engineering and technology (rank to be decided on basis of the CV of the selected candidate). The position is 100 % funded by Ghent University Global Campus but combining a 90 % appointment at GUGC with a 10 % appointment at Ghent University home campus. The position is a contractual appointment initially for a period of 2-years but to be converted into an indefinite contractual appointment after positive evaluation. ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY AND GHENT UNIVERSITY GLOBAL CAMPUS

Ghent University is one of the most important education and research institutions in the Low Countries. On a daily basis, over 9,000 staff members and 41,000 students implement its motto "Dare to Think". Ghent University's mission statement is characterised by qualitative education, internationally renowned research and a pluralistic social responsibility.

The Ghent University Global Campus (GUGC) is an extended campus of Ghent University located in Song-Do, South Korea, which is a dense urban and industrial environment. At GUGC we currently provide a bachelor program in Environmental Technology and are developing an associated master program as well as a research portfolio. To expand our activities, we are looking for a full time (assistant) professor (rank to be decided after selection) with experience in environmental engineering and technology. More particularly, we wish to strengthen our technological basis within the environmental program with a key focus on water and waste technologies within a circular economy context. Main topics of interest may include bio-energy, resource recovery, wastewater treatment, drinking water production, soil remediation or air purification. Additional topics may include monitoring, bioprospecting, applied microbial ecology, ecophysiological processes. The approaches can be both physico-chemical, ecological or biotechnological but a certain affinity with biotechnological processes is favorable given the close link that can be established with existing programs within GUGC.

 

ASSIGNMENT

Academic education

You will lecture various course units in the discipline of environmental engineering and technology or basic disciplines closely associated with this domain.

 

Academic Research

You conduct research in the field of environmental engineering and technology

 

Academic services

You take part in the internal and external service provision of the GUGC research center of environmental technology and takes up a leading position in the development of the bachelor and later master program in this discipline. Together with the colleagues affiliated to the research center and colleagues at the home campus of Ghent university you develop the GUGC center of environmental technology so that it becomes a center of expertise recognized in South Korea and beyond. Therefore, experience with accessing (inter)national research funding for research in Asia and South Korea is a surplus.

 

Management and administration

  • Undertake internal roles of responsibility e.g. contribute to committees and working groups, act as a mentor.

  • Advice and support colleagues with less experience and advise on academic and personal development.

  • Participate in internal initiatives/events to the benefit of the University e.g. open days, outreach activities, student placements.

  • Act as a supervisor for the work of others, for example, research teams or projects or as a PhD supervisor.

 

PROFILE
Experience

  • You have already conducted excellent academic research in environmental engineering and technology, which is clearly reflected in outstanding publications in national and international peer-reviewed books and/or journals;

  • You have actively participated in national and international scientific meetings which are relevant for environmental engineering;

  • You have the didactic, communicative and organizational skills to teach university students to develop academic competences;

  • Recommended are:

    • Affinity with environmental problems and solutions in Asia and Korea in particular

    • Interest in biotechnological processes applied to environmental engineering, even if your previous research experience was in a different area;

    • Experience in supervising research and/or coaching Ph.D. students;

    • International mobility, shown by among others research stays at foreign institutions;

    • Experience in academic lecturing with positive evaluation;

    • Professionalization in education.

    • Experience with attracting research funding in general and Asia in particular

       

      Skills / Attitude

  • You are quality-oriented;

  • You take initiative;

  • You are proficient in English, both in oral and written communication;

  • You are a team-player open minded for collaborations within both GUGC and with the Ghent University home campus

     

    Admission requirements

  • You hold a thesis-based doctorate or a diploma or certificate that is recognised as equivalent (article V.20 Codex Higher Education).

  • You have at least two years of postdoctoral experience by September 1st 2020. This term of two years is determined by the date written on the above-mentioned required diploma.

     

     

     

    APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

    We offer you a contract as a professor either in the grade of an assistant, associated or full professor depending on your previous career and scientific output. According to the Korean law, the contract will initially be for a two years’ period, after which an infinite period contract is given on condition of a positive evaluation of the performance. With respect to the career path, we follow the same rules and evaluation periods as for a professorship at Ghent University home campus (see https://www.ugent.be/en/work/mobility-career/career-aspects/professorial-staff). Although fully employed on the pay-role of GUGC, the appointment consists of a 90 % appointment at GUGC and a 10 % appointment at Ghent university home campus. This makes that the selected candidate has access to all possibilities offered to professors of Ghent University with respect to internal funding calls and access to services offered by the home campus. The selected candidate will be integrated in a department of the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering. One of the important benefits is that candidates who are newly appointed at Ghent University receive starting gratn of 210.000 EUR to contribute toward the personnel, operating and / or equivalent costs of establishing a research team.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

After the final application date, all received applications will be sent to the assessment committee assembled for this vacancy. This committee will first evaluate the application files. Therefore, it will match all elements of the file against the required expertise for the position in terms of education, research and scientific service. Based on this deliberation, relevant candidates will be shortlisted to be invited for further selection (interview, possible presentation or test lecture …). Afterwards, the committee will rank the suitable candidates and present this ranking to the GUGC and Faculty Boards. This advice will then be presented to the University Board for approval.

 

Candidates are asked to list their top 5 most important publications or other academic achievements with the highest impact. Next to academic publications, the candidate is thus also able to show merit of knowledge transfer by academic dissemination, social valorisation, public awareness, seminars or conference presentations. These competences are also taken into account when evaluating the candidates.

 

The evaluation of the required international mobility is broad and partly takes the gender perspective into account, thus not only considering longer stays abroad by also other forms of internationalisation.

 

Pregnancy leave, prolonged sick leave, parental leave, filial leave or other forms of absence are taken into account when evaluating the available time for the realisation of academic output.
